The diner mug originated from a U.S. Navy request for a sturdy coffee mug during World War II, which was fulfilled by the Victor Insulator Company in Victor, New York. Made from the same durable porcelain used for electrical insulators, the design featured thick walls, a heavy base to prevent tipping on ships, and a rough bottom ring for grip. After the war, the design was adapted with a handle for commercial use and became popular in diners, eventually being widely imitated.
